In America, compensation drives behavior in all industries -- healthcare included. But no one ever seems willing to tackle the real beast. But even when dancing with this rather gigantic change, we need to think through the unintended consequences before taking action.

Additionally, we all know there is a fair amount of waste in all organizations that employ humans -- again, including healthcare. Good labor cost management and case management can do a lot to creating more efficient and effective hospitals. Healthcare reform will force providers to take a hard look at organizational fitness and patient flow.
